Admirers of the graphic arts are invited to the official opening of an exciting new exhibit at the WNY Book Arts Center (468 Washington at Mohawk in Buffalo) on Friday, November 20th, 2009, from 6 – 9 p.m. The event showcases work by a select group of alumni from Daemen College’s Graphic Design BFA Program who call themselves “Vouw Blad.” The name is Dutch and translates to “Falling Leaf.” Graduates from this program work in all aspects of graphic design throughout the US.

The event promises complimentary appetizers and a cash bar, and will showcase a wide range of entries from local and national Daemen College alums, including:

  • A poster designed for Righteous Babe Records
  • Advertising collateral developed for local backyard game sensation, KanJam
  • A photo essay of the Dominican Republic
  • A menu and print advertisements for local eatery, Trattoria Aroma
  • A newly-branded brochure and website for a skilled nursing facility in New Jersey
  • An environmental branding installation for the Buffalo Bills fieldhouse

Kevin J. Kegler, Daemen College Professor of Graphic Design, leads the Vouw Blad group and spearheaded the exhibit. “The work that is being shown in this exhibit doesn’t always receive the spotlight from the arts community” says Kegler. “That’s why it was important for us to display this work in a professional gallery setting so that viewers understand the value that graphic designers bring to the art of visual communication.”

While at the event, attendees can learn more about the traditional craft of setting type by visiting the permanent collection of fully functional letterpresses and typesetting supplies housed downstairs in the WNY Book Arts Center.
